Greetings from Alberta
Economic Development
There is no place like Alberta. Alberta is a land of ingenuity and opportunity, with a
government that encourages foreign trade, investment and innovation.
Alberta is blessed with an abundance of natural advantages, which have formed the
foundation of our province’s thriving economy. The Alberta government has engineered
an economic plan that ensures a positive business climate and attracts investment,
creates diversity and empowers Alberta businesses to compete successfully around the
globe. The result is one of the world’s most vibrant and competitive economies.
Alberta is about abundant energy—bountiful, sustainable and secure natural resources
and 176 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. Alberta is about proven innovation.
Alberta’s oil industry operates in some of the most challenging and varied conditions on
the globe. This highly competitive industry is skilled in dealing with temperature
extremes, permafrost, muskeg and vast distances.
To meet these challenges, oil and gas companies continually develop new technologies
to enhance almost every aspect of energy development. As a result, Alberta businesses
are recognized as world leaders in areas such as oil sands, heavy and super-heavy oil
technologies, horizontal drilling and casing-while-drilling technologies, reservoir
engineering, three-dimensional geophysical survey and satellite thermal mapping
methods, and sour gas technologies.
Alberta’s oil and gas industry also takes an innovative approach to operating in remote
locations, laying pipelines, transporting resources over vast distances and developing
resources while minimizing the environmental footprint.
Countries around the world approach Alberta for unique oil and gas solutions. Alberta
companies are adept at reducing costs and improving exploration and drilling efficiency,
as well as oil and gas production and transportation.
Alberta is one of the world’s leading oil and gas producers. It produces 80 per cent of
Canada’s natural gas, almost 50 per cent of its conventional crude oil and 100 per cent of
its bitumen and synthetic crude oil. Alberta has developed innovative oil patch solutions
that are increasingly exported around the world.
In addition to being a top worldwide producer, Alberta is working toward a vision to
achieve a competitive hydrocarbon upgrading industry through refining and
petrochemical plants that expand the market for Alberta’s bitumen resource and
produce higher-value products in Alberta.
As a world leader in many aspects of energy development, Alberta has the knowledge to
help companies in other countries increase their efficiency and reduce costs. Doing
business with Alberta makes sense!
The Alberta government works with industry to promote Alberta’s unique expertise and
capabilities around the world. With more than 50 years’ experience of developing
Alberta’s heavy oil and oil sands resources, Alberta’s industry is second to none.
